What We Do

The Southern Uplands Partnership has a team who are skilled in developing and securing funding for a wide range of projects and organisations. Since 1999 SUP have initiated over 60 significant socially and environmentally sustainable projects and secured and invested over £4m of project funding.

In recent years the SUP has developed and managed a number of notable projects including;

Ettrick and Yarrow Valleys Project where we worked with the local communities to identify the challenges and issues they were facing and helped them develop and scope out fully costed action plans which offered a range of solutions.

We helped secure UNESCO Biosphere status for Galloway and Southern Ayrshire. A first for Scotland, our Biosphere is part of a family of over 600 biospheres worldwide. The status celebrates the region’s commitment to encouraging and promoting opportunities that help foster a harmonious relationship between man and nature and is expected to be a major driver for tourism and sustainable development. SUP currently employ and manage the Biosphere project team tasked with implementing the biosphere action plan.

SUP was the driving force behind bringing together a partnership to deliver Wild Seasons, a year round nature-based tourism initiative designed to showcase the unique wildlife, woodlands and flora of Dumfries and Galloway. Wild Seasons has gone from strength to strength and, in recent years, has celebrated two significant seasonal festivals in Spring and Autumn. The 2013 Wild Spring Festival attracted a record 5000 visitors spending over £200K in the local economy. We are currently working to expand Wild Seasons into the Scottish Borders region.

The Partnership has significant experience of the following:

  • Project Development and Management
  • Community engagement and capacity building
  • Identification of funding sources
  • Grant application guidance and support
  • Administration of funds
  • Conservation Land and Species Management advice
  • Nature Based Tourism development
  • Recreational Route development, negotiation and management
